The Kokoda Challenge Brisbane is an annual team endurance event located throughout the beautiful D'Aguilar National Park. 2018 saw Coomera Rivers enter the 15km event for the very first time. The Coomera Rivers Crusaders was born! Training started many months ago and saw 5 staff members and 20 students waking up before sun set on Saturday mornings to various training locations - Currumbin, Burleigh, Bonogin and the Nerang State Forest. Mr Murillo lead these training sessions and often invited some very inspirational athletes to come along and join us. We couldn't have been more ready for the event.
Saturday, 2nd June 6:45AM was bitterly cold at the Brookfield Showgrounds Reserve however our 4 teams were fully pumped to set off at 8am. The goal was to demonstrate the core values epitomised by the Kokoda Foundation - Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice. It wasn't about coming first or second, but to cross the line as a team - no one gets left behind.
We couldn't be more proud of our students and their ability to dig deep and push themselves beyond what they thought possible - not just physically but also mentally. Their ability to encourage their team mates was truly inspiring. We hope that this experience will be one they remember for many years to come. A very big thank you to our staff who gave up their Saturdays to train with our students - Mr Murillo, Mr Burrows, Mrs McLean and Mrs Walsh. Parents also deserve a mention for their commitment to the program and driving their children to the various locations at such early hours of the morning. And finally, a very big thank you to Wild Earth who sponsored our students, making it possible for us to enter 4 teams without any cost to families.

It's worth noting we had 2 reserves along with Mrs Artz who attended each and every training session. Bronte F and Mikayla N were there on the day, ready to support the 4 teams right across the finish line. Our reserves joined the teams at the 3 km checkpoint and ran with Mrs McLean's team across the finish line.
To highlight how well our teams performed, it is also worth noting that there were a total of 542 participants in this event with approximately 110 teams. All our students came in the top 140 participants and every single one of our teams crossed the finish line together.
What a impressive effort for our first ever Kokoda Challenge! We can't wait for next year.
