2017 Dance Excellence
Year 2017 witnessed our first ever ‘Dance Excellence Program for students in Year 4–6. We saw 84 students audition to ‘JuJu on that Beat’ for a position on the team, however we could only accept 28 students. The successful students not only displayed coordination and dance skills but they also demonstrated spunk and stage presence
The Dance Excellence Program offered one-hour lessons each week with dance teachers, Thomas Eynstone-Hinkins and Ruby Wilson from Footings Dance Studio. Unfortunately Thomas left us half way through the program to further his career so Miss Ruby and Miss Kori took the lead and taught our dancers a unique hip-hop routine so that we could represent Coomera Rivers at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod. School assemblies and The Coomera Rivers Community Fair were great opportunities where students were able to flaunt their talent to the community and practice their performance skills to an audience. This put them in good stead for the main event – The Gold Coast Eisteddfod Competition that took place at the end of August.
Students looked great on stage in their hip hop gear. We were fortunate enough to have received sponsorship from Yatala Self Storage, McDonalds Pimpama and Harrigan's which meant our students were outfitted with some very cool 'Crew Shirts' to go with their very ‘cool’ hip-hop look. Our Dance Crew earned a Very Highly Commended award. This is equivalent to a fourth place in the 19 school strong competition.
The result was so pleasing and we are really proud of what we have achieved in our first year of dance excellence. Mr Graham believes that we would have been on the podium if some of his dance move suggestions were included. He believes that the shopping trolley and the butter churner moves are never out of fashion. Well… maybe next year. Adjudicators commented on our students’ spunk and talent and we couldn’t agree more! Onwards and upwards!
