Speech pathology

Coomera Rivers State School has the services of a speech and language pathologist to support children who may be identified with difficulties in speech, fluency and language development. The speech and language pathologist works as part of the educational team in our school providing some or all of the following services:

  • assessments
  • diagnoses
  • therapy sessions
  • interventions
  • consultations
  • in-service and training programs
  • English as a second language.

The ESL program in Queensland state schools provides English language support to students from language backgrounds other than English. The Coomera Rivers State School program aims to develop these students' English to enable them to participate fully in mainstream classrooms and to enhance their learning outcomes.

ESL learners are children with second language learning needs. They come from a variety of backgrounds, including Indigenous, immigrant and refugee backgrounds. They are often faced with issues of settlement, language or poverty in addition to the challenges they face as learners of Standard Australian English.

Newly arrived children aged five to 12 years of age are eligible for assistance. An ESL teacher may be assigned to give support and advice to the mainstream classroom teacher or teach, as required.

Learning support

All students with learning difficulties need to work in a supportive and inclusive environment, where teachers and support personnel work together to provide strategies to assist them to access the curriculum. Coomera Rivers State School is visited by a number of support personnel in order to assist class teachers to build support for these students into the class environment and into their classroom units of work.
