Coomera Rivers State School and the Gold Coast City Council, as part of the Active School Travel Program, encourage you to get involved as we walk to school as part of Fun Fit Friday!

The program encourages us, as a school community to ‘change the way you move’ by walking, cycling, car pooling or catching public transport to and from school. As a result, you and your children will enjoy a healthier lifestyle, save on fuel and parking issues and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable Gold Coast.

As part of the program we will have three groups walking to school every Friday!

Please consider joining us at one of our three walk to school starting points - the flyer provides all the details of the walking groups.

But you don’t have to walk - you can bus, car pool with another family or bike ride as well - all of these options will see your child receive a stamp in their Active School Travel passport. Once your child has collected 5 Active School Travel stamps they will be eligible to receive a reward.

As a school community, based on a recent survey of students travel habits, 32% of our community uses an active school travel method to and from school. We would like to increase that percentage to 50%.

We are keeping track of our progress - the table below shows our weekly results and our average Active Travel result as we aim of that 50% target.

Along with the individual reward system that we hope encourages students to join our Fun Fit Friday, we also have class incentives.

Each fortnight one impressive active travel class in Prep, junior school, middle school and senior school will win the coveted 'Golden Boot Award'. The class that has the highest percentage of active travel will be awarded this prestigious trophy which will take pride of place in their classroom.

Benefits for children who actively travel include:

  • improved road safety skills
  • improve student health through increased physical activity
  • children arrive at school alert and ready to learn
  • improved concentration, sleep and relaxation
  • improved self-esteem, confidence, independence
  • opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills
  • more time together with family and friends.

Local community benefits include:

  • reduced traffic congestion
  • safer school drop-off and pick-up zones
  • improved air quality
  • a more social community.

Hope to see you actively traveling to and from school on our Fun Fit Fridays!
